A Letter Home From The Citadel
Senior Class of the Citadel
January 27, 1918

Dear Mama,
As I have nothing to do this afternoon, I'll answer your letter.  Have gotten rid of my sore eyes.  I had a rare case.  One week only my right eye was sore.  I cured it up and then the next week my left eye got sore, so it amounted to having the sore eyes twice.  I went to the hospital for treatment as soon as they began to hurt and by getting them treated three times a day, I soon got over it.
I haven't seen anything else of Joe since the first day.  They have got him shut up so we can't see each other.  I called up his place today, but they said he couldn't come to the phone.  I was up at the Navy Yard Friday night but as the quarantine was on, I couldn't go to the hospital.  Fowler Boyd is stationed up there.  He invited another cadet and myself up to supper Friday.  He married Grace Pool from Laurens.  I guess you remember her, don't you?  I have been up to see them twice.
I heard from Sam the other day, and he told me about moving his date up.  I thought maybe they would do that.  I want to get off for a week for the big event, but don't know whether I can succeed or not.  Tell Papa I'll send him a letter later on to copy and send back for this sorry Supt. of ours.  You have to go at it in a business like way if you get away from here.  Some of the boys use pretty rough language when they are discussing the prospects of getting a furlough.  I heard one say the other day that his Grandma had already died twice so he could get home, and it was almost time for her to die again.  Think I'll use a different policy.
Yesterday 18 of us went out into the country to cut wood to make a bayonet course.  We stayed all day and the work made me feel like I was at home.  As a result of working during the day, we got leave last night while the others had to stay in.  We went to a basketball game between two girls schools and it was sure amusing to watch them.  They were almost as rough as boys.  The visiting team was from Savannah and they had the hard luck to get beat.  After the game was over, they turned it into a dance.
Have you seen Melle lately?  I sent her some little magnolia trees last week but haven't heard whether she received them in good condition or not.  I got them out in the woods when we went on an expedition.
Have you heard any more from Carlisle?  Joe was telling me that he had not been receiving all the mail that you have been sending him.  I wrote him a letter just after coming back Xmas.
At present I am by myself.  My roommate has gone home for two weeks.  He joined the aviation corps and is subject to call any time.  Several have joined from my class and more are going to.  I am going to remain here until I finish, though, no matter how many go.  Stroup, the boy who was home at Xmas, has joined.
How is the weather treating you all now?  Today it is real warm but I don't look for it to last long.

Think I had better stop now and go to sleep as I am on guard tonight.
            Affectionately,
               Leland
